About Amy Thomas: Amy is the founder of the Metropolitan Closet Company in Madrid. Together with her team, she designs, constructs, and installs wardrobes and storage systems for dressing rooms, tailored to the individual wishes and needs of her clients. In an interview with MAWA, she tells us a little more about how it all began and shares her insider tips for keeping your wardrobe organized.
You are the founder of the Metropolitan Closet Company, tell us how it all began!
We founded the Metropolitan Closet Company many years ago, in 1992 to be precise. At that time, we were fascinated by the growing popularity of walk-in closets and dressing rooms in the USA and brought the idea to Spain. We adapted these trends to closets and offered custom-designed closet doors for our wardrobes.
I remember that walk-in closets were a complete novelty in Europe at the time, but they quickly became increasingly popular here as well. People's needs had changed, and the desire for order in the wardrobe grew stronger. In fact, this sector has continued to grow ever since.
What makes Metropolitan Closet Company special, why do your customers choose you specifically?
At Metropolitan Closet Company, we offer our customers the best of both worlds: a high-quality, functional product for better wardrobe organization, combined with stunning design. Many of our clients are families for whom we initially (re)designed the parents' wardrobes and dressing rooms, and then, a few years later, their children's as well, once they've settled into their own homes. Increasingly, our clients are also moving to larger houses or apartments due to family growth, and we then design new storage solutions for their new homes as well.
I believe our customers initially come to us because of our appealing design. However, once we begin the entire process, they realize just how much experience we have in this field and how much know-how we put into each individual storage system to make it as practical and flexible as possible, truly utilizing the available space.
All in all, I think our customers primarily come to us to buy a simple wardrobe and receive a high-quality, personalized design.
In autumn, many people reorganize their wardrobes, sorting their clothes or swapping light summer dresses for sweaters and thick winter coats and jackets. As an expert in this area, do you have any insider tips on how best to approach such a project? Where should one begin? What criteria are best for organizing a wardrobe?
Yes, that's right, the changing of the seasons often brings with it a need to reorganize wardrobes. I think the best way to approach such a project is to systematize it. First, you take out the clothes you want to replace, then you take a moment to clean the inside of the wardrobe or dressing room, and then you put the new clothes back in.
We often make space for seasonal clothing in storage rooms and use metal clothes racks to store the clothes on hangers instead of folding them. This prevents creases and keeps the garments in good condition.
If you have a separate room or basement for storing clothes, the process is even simpler. You take the seasonal clothing out of the closet and hang it on a clothes rack with wheels. There, the clothes can easily be stored in protective garment bags to keep them dust-free in the meantime.
Once the clothes rack is full, you roll it into the storage room (often directly into an elevator and into the basement) and then simply hang the clothes on the clothes rails in the storage room or basement.
The next step is to hang the remaining clothes that are now to be used again on the rack and roll them back into the main wardrobe or the appropriate dressing room, and after the area has been cleaned, to take the clothes out of their storage bags and put them back in the wardrobe, and there you have order in the wardrobe again.
If no other space is available to hang the garments, they can be folded and stored in special boxes or even suitcases. In any case, it is important that they are stored properly, folded well, or hung on a good hanger that keeps the shoulders and collars in shape, so that the garments are not damaged during the off-season.

What is the secret to a tidy wardrobe, and above all, how do you keep it tidy?
The secret to an organized wardrobe is to designate areas that are the right size for your clothes. That means if you're using shelves for sweaters, make sure they're for one, two, or three piles, but never one and a half. If you're creating a space for shoes, make sure you adjust the width of the space to accommodate one pair of shoes.
The clothes rack is one of the most important parts of the wardrobe, and clothing items should be grouped by category.
Shirts with collars, sweaters, jackets, trousers, skirts, etc. Once you have enough space for your clothes and the right hangers, it's very easy to keep your wardrobe or dressing room tidy. Just make sure that you put your clothes back in their place after you take them out, when you're no longer wearing them, or when they're fresh out of the wash.

Aside from the wardrobe/organization system itself, what products or accessories do you recommend to your customers?
As I've already mentioned, clothes hangers are the most important thing. I also highly recommend: jewelry trays for drawers,
Drawer dividers, stands or hangers for ties, belts and scarves, valet stands and LED lighting.
