During a visit to Scheyern Monastery, located very close to MAWA's hometown, we discovered coat hangers that aren't found in any ordinary wardrobe. Each monk's robe has its own individual hanger, tailored to the particular robe:
The coat hanger as we know it originated in 16th-century Central Europe. The first hangers evolved from wooden chests used to store uniforms.
The American President Thomas Jefferson (1743 to 1826) is said to have invented the forerunner of the wooden coat hanger.
In 1865, Wilhelm Busch published the mischievous tales of Max and Moritz. This picture shows a drawing with a coat hanger.
The first German patent for coat hangers was registered in 1884.
It turns out that the coat hanger has existed for a very long time in a wide variety of forms and uses.
