This love story is about coat hangers – made in Germany but loved around the world. But that's not all. It's also about people: our employees, our customers, and our companions over the past 75 years.
It all began with our founder, Martin Wagner, and his wife, Ida Wagner, whom some of our colleagues have met personally. They shared a few secrets about a very special woman who, despite being 80 years old, could still juggle six-figure numbers in her head without a problem. According to our Export Manager, Cornelia Kaiser, and our Head of Work Preparation, Silvia Bichler, who both started at MAWA as apprentices back then, Ida Wagner was a real personality. She started each day with a pretzel and the daily newspaper and often sat barefoot in the office so her nail polish could dry after a visit to the beautician. Even back then, a friendly and family-like working environment was very important to her, something that is still very important at MAWA today. This is also reflected in the relationship with our customers! Some of our sales team even knows our customers' children personally. One even stopped by while passing through Italy and started his vacation with a visit to our beer garden. Afterwards, his 10-year-old son went for a spin in a convertible with one of our employees! Another example is our major Chinese customer Shawn Huang. He shares his best experience with MAWA:
I remember it clearly, it was with Michaela. She invited me to dinner at her home in Pfaffenhofen. We sat on her terrace, a friend grilled steaks, and we looked out at the garden and the sky. It was very relaxed and chilled. No Michelin-starred restaurant could have been more beautiful.
This personal and warm relationship is what defines MAWA – and makes us not just a supplier but a true partner for our major customers!
The passion for our everyday helpers is also evident in our employees. Gernot Reichert from IT/Online, for example, used his visit to MAWA at the Pfaffenhofen folk festival to propose to his then-girlfriend:
MAWA can also be romantic – I should have hung the ring on a sweetheart.
Another example of our employees' passion for our products is Stella Gencoglan from the packaging. She spends her free time creating new designs for our hangers, which she regularly shares with our Managing Director, Michaela Schenk:
BECAUSE SHE'S SO NICE. She really has a smile for all her employees.
However, MAWA employees have also endured difficult times, such as the insolvency in 2005, shortly before Ms. Schenk took over. But then, just as now, the employees stick together and support one another, both in times of personal setbacks and when things aren't quite right within the company. This was the case with Zhenya Kurochkina from our sales department in 2022, when war broke out in her home country of Ukraine.
She launched a fundraising campaign and was overwhelmed by the great support and many donations from her colleagues.
